I had an amazing opportunity to work with some folks I can truly apply the prefix “Über“, a German language word meaning “over”, “super”, “above” or “across”.
Über-chill, Über-talented, Über-committed and Über-get-it-done, this cross-departmental team delivers high speed Internet to the entirety of Black Rock City, allowing staff to keep things humming.
One special member of our team, the “best dressed on playa” daily in my opinion, was one of many I spied wearing over-the-ear bone-conducting headphones. I eventually had to ask to take them for a short spin in the commissary and I suddenly understood three things:
- 1.) The quality of bone conduction can be quite incredible.
- 2.) Using bone conduction instead of direct in-ear drivers allows the wearer to remain aware of their surroundings, avoiding hazards while biking, hiking, walking etc.
- 3.) These devices can pair with Bluetooth-capable radio units from most manufacturers, allowing even more options depending on the work or volunteer situation.
One of the very first items I treated myself to when returning to Reality Camp(tm) was a pair of the Open Run from a big-box store that could deliver in a few hours. They set me back around $130, while an Open Run Pro 2 version is also available for $180. [Yes, I wish I’d gone ahead with top shelf.]

Pro Tip: If you’re in a safe location, add ear plugs. You’ll enjoy a much richer bass response regardless of any slight movement of the buds during activities.
