If you’re looking for genuinely good Mexican food in June Lake, Balanced Rock Grill & Cantina is well worth a stop — and the chile relleno deserves special attention.
Located in the historic Sierra Inn building on Highway 158, Balanced Rock has developed a strong reputation for fresh, homemade Mexican food served in a comfortable, small-town atmosphere. Current customer ratings are consistently excellent, with roughly 4.6–4.7 stars across major review platforms.
But the dish that repeatedly catches people’s attention is the Chile Relleno.

The restaurant’s current menu describes its chile rellenos as poblano peppers stuffed with queso fresco, lightly fried and topped with red sauce. They’re also available as an entrée or a la carte. (Balanced Rock Grill)
And the customer feedback is remarkably enthusiastic.
One longtime Mexican-food diner described the chile relleno as “one of the best I’ve ever had,” noting that they had been eating Mexican food for nearly 60 years. Another reviewer initially ordered something completely different, received a chile relleno instead, and ended up calling it amazing, specifically praising the fresh tortillas and sauce. Yet another customer simply summarized their experience with: “chile relleno is a must try here!!” (Balanced Rock Grill)
What makes it stand out?
The common thread in the reviews is freshness and homemade preparation. Guests frequently mention the homemade tortillas, fresh salsa, flavorful beans and the overall impression that the food is prepared rather than simply assembled. The restaurant itself says its recipes are family recipes passed down through generations. (Balanced Rock Grill)
The atmosphere gets similar praise: cozy, welcoming and distinctly small-town. Several reviewers specifically mention the friendliness of the family running the restaurant and the homey character of the dining room.
Our take
If you only order one thing at Balanced Rock, make it the chile relleno.
The combination of a roasted poblano, queso fresco, light frying and red sauce seems to be the restaurant’s sweet spot — traditional, uncomplicated Mexican food done exceptionally well.
Pair it with the fresh homemade tortillas, chips and salsa, and perhaps a margarita, and you’ve got a meal that seems to represent exactly what Balanced Rock does best.

This evening we enjoyed hands down the absolute best chili rellenos EVER, with hefty cheese filling and outer breading. The beans and rice were perfect – like your abuela might make them.
